About The Event

The Atlanta Silverlight Firestarter is an all day event for beginner to intermediate developers and designers which provides an overview of Silverlight, including what tools are useful in development, and the knowledge in order to start building applications. The day will begin with Silverlight basics and ramp up to more advanced technologies. Towards the end of the day participants will have the opportunity to build a Silverlight application and experiment with what they’ve learned.

The event will be located at the Microsoft offices in Alpharetta. Coffee and donuts will be provided in the morning and lunch will be provided as well. Registration is free but will be limited to the first 150 people who sign up.

There is no need to have already played with Silverlight before coming, come to the event and get fired up to start developing in Silverlight!

Lighting up your UI

In this session we will focus on Expression Blend 3 and how you can use it to create modern user interfaces with great interactivity and design. We will quickly cover the basics of Blend before jumping into animations, the Visual State Manager, how to customize and theme typical user controls, and tips on programatic animations and when you should consider using them.

Design Tools – SketchFlow and Sample Data

Microsoft Expression Blend 3 revolutionizes the speed and efficiency of prototyping the vision for an application, providing the designer and developer with a rich set of tools to deliver rich interactive experiences on time and within budget. Blend enables you to demonstrate and iterate on ideas, application flows, screen layouts, and the functionality of an application.

Deployment Strategies

This session will focus on a typical deployment process for a Silverlight application. Configuration and security of communications with a server will be covered. Assembly caching and other options of reducing download size will be talked about. IIS Server configuration will be discussed. Debugging techniques for communication with a server in production environment will be covered.

Presenter Bios

James Ashley

James Ashley has been working as a software developer, architect and mentor in the Atlanta area for the past twelve years. During his career, James has worked with a variety of languages, technologies and systems. He has been working with the .NET platform since the beta bits in 2001.

James is currently a senior consultant with Magenic Technologies, a Microsoft Gold Managed Partner and National Systems Integrator, where he specializes in ASP.NET AJAX, Silverlight, WPF, WCF and Workflow. He is a frequent Atlanta speaker, a star contributor on the ASP.NET forums and blogger.

Sergey Barskiy

Sergey Barskiy is a principal consultant with Magenic Technologies. He has been developing applications solely based on Microsoft technologies since mid 90s and working exclusively with .NET since 2003. He has been working with Silverlight since beta 2, as a member of CSLA for Silverlight development team and as a developer on client Silverlight based projects. He spoke on CSLA.NET and Silverlight at the last two Atlanta Code Camps, as well as presented on many topics, including Silverlight at Atlanta .NET users’ group, MS Pros and GGMUG. He also authored “Database for Silverlight” project on CodePlex.

Roger Peters is a C# .Net developer of 6+ years with a background in WinForms application development. He has been involved in software development and computer graphics for 14+ years and has become solely dedicated to Silverlight development after creating and releasing Matchingo – an open source Silverlight game as part of a Microsoft sponsored Silverlight game contest. Roger runs SmartyPantsCoding.com and is currently working as a full-time Silverlight developer at IQ Interactive.

Jason is a Consultant for Magenic in Atlanta. His specialties include in-depth knowledge of WPF, Silverlight and XAML. He has spoken at multiple events including user group participations and multiple sessions at Atlanta Code Camp 09. Corey Schuman

Corey Schuman is a Silverlight developer who concentrates on combining quality application architecture with highly interactive UI experiences. His experience in Silverlight extends from the first release in September 2007. At Schematic, Corey worked on projects such as the NBCOlympics.com Silverlight video player, HSN.tv, and WPF kiosks for the Library of Congress. He is currently working with the talented team at IQ Interactive, on an exciting Silverlight application, can’t give too much away ;) .Corey is actively involved in the community by speaking, authoring Silverlight books, blogging, and organizing the Atlanta Silverlight Meetup.
